I haven't been slacking off. I didn't lose interest in sewing or blogging. Life just got very complicated - and sad.<br />
<br />
My father was diagnosed with cancer in January 2014. Despite incredible courage, strength, and grace, he succumbed to the disease almost exactly two years after receiving his diagnosis. I didn't do much sewing while he was sick. I often felt like I wasn't spending enough time with my dad <u>or</u> spending enough time with my husband and children. I opted for sleep rather than stitches. If you're part of the Sandwich Generation then you can no doubt relate.<br />

As winter approaches, I feel the need to pull out patterns, pins, fabric, and scissors. To create clothes and quilts to keep loved ones warm. And hopefully to do some healing after a long journey that ended the way I had hoped and prayed it never would.<br />
<br />
Please stay tuned for I have tips and tutorials to share. Thanks for being here.<br />

Happy last day of 2014! Are your evening plans all lined up? Is your outfit ready? Have you made your list of resolutions?<br />
<br />
I had precious little time to sew in 2014 as family and health issues took precedence. These few project provided a bit of joy, though, in an otherwise challenging year.<br />

This one is in progress. In an effort to be proactive, I tackled the pile of leftover bits and pieces from a recently pieced quilt top rather than waiting for them to gather dust. Improvisational quilting isn't usually my thing but this was so fun I plan to do more in 2015. <br />

I love to sew on New Year's Day. It's become a tradition and I hope tomorrow is no exception. My plan is to finish this Christmas tree skirt. Yeah, it wasn't ready for the big day in 2014, but I'll be way ahead of schedule for 2015. Go me!<br />

<div>
I've been anxious to start blogging again after taking some time off to focus on a family medical situation. When Karen of <a href="http://www.badlandsquilts.com/" target="_blank">Badlands Quilts</a> asked me to join the <a href="http://www.badlandsquilts.com/2014/10/around-world-blog-hop.html" target="_blank">Around the World Blog Hop</a> I knew this was my chance to jump back in. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Karen and I met when the <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/" target="_blank">Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild</a> was just starting up. Karen has organized many of our group's challenges, block lotteries, and exchanges. Thanks to her efforts, I've sewn blocks I never would have tackled on my own. She's an intrepid quilter with an enormous range of techniques and styles. Do check out her blog if you aren't a follower/reader yet.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

And now to the questions...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><i>1. What am I working on?</i></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Basting! Everybody's favorite task, right? I have three quilts to baste, quilt, and bind. I absolutely positively will not start a new project until I tackle Mount Quilt Tops. Maybe.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaKIgpFG0gPkX2tGBi1mHsuNLxqZhlVISxbU0igcK3KYO_3AVHvzG6qI6-dxB0X76Tctynv2OMO6CIguxst0oS15uTbr9rJw8QDXOeQVeCoaWheT2gi3UyE5asf6NaCT6taYptXFWRtbA1/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaKIgpFG0gPkX2tGBi1mHsuNLxqZhlVISxbU0igcK3KYO_3AVHvzG6qI6-dxB0X76Tctynv2OMO6CIguxst0oS15uTbr9rJw8QDXOeQVeCoaWheT2gi3UyE5asf6NaCT6taYptXFWRtbA1/s1600/014.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm also working on warm, winter-friendly clothes for the kids. Here are some corduroy pants in progress for my 5 year old daughter. I used a bit of leftover bias quilt binding to face the inside of the front pockets for a fun little detail. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTq9EWUuwdQOha5mKnRHotMzGfpOAQfP8tvI0Knim17ywfl5u35DNnwkHrW9_kKyrla_gbqY9AhoTzR80LHMhhyo0mcaiPtEcL4r-XMjnxPZ7OFwIMOhb-AOg0sIlRRrvbEF5jJU0gaPHU/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTq9EWUuwdQOha5mKnRHotMzGfpOAQfP8tvI0Knim17ywfl5u35DNnwkHrW9_kKyrla_gbqY9AhoTzR80LHMhhyo0mcaiPtEcL4r-XMjnxPZ7OFwIMOhb-AOg0sIlRRrvbEF5jJU0gaPHU/s1600/018.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
FYI: the pants pattern is from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/103760363/ottobre-design-autumn-issue-4-2012?ref=shop_home_active_23" target="_blank">Ottobre Design's</a> Autumn 4/2012 issue. It's called "Forest Path." These pants are suitable for both boys and girls. I'll let you know how they turn out.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><i>2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?</i></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I consider myself a modern quilter, but mostly I just love simplicity, bright colors, graphic prints, and contrast.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCK3z9QPEqLLe45pXEvyd4mZnO4547myzRvPAQM7bbMcI4rcgcvQx-s12-XgV1EmRIUadzMqwazZjrAc_9i8iGJcnWyMKs0_pu68zjsxxfjgOXaVbf2xtcC7nP5Y4QkUai-vCD2SgNlKSG/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCK3z9QPEqLLe45pXEvyd4mZnO4547myzRvPAQM7bbMcI4rcgcvQx-s12-XgV1EmRIUadzMqwazZjrAc_9i8iGJcnWyMKs0_pu68zjsxxfjgOXaVbf2xtcC7nP5Y4QkUai-vCD2SgNlKSG/s1600/012.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My "signature" style element seems to be teeny tiny sashing. Honestly, I love it so much that I have to actively avoid adding it to every quilt I make.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><i>3. Why do I write/create what I do?</i></b><br />
<b><i><br /></i></b>
You know how it is. Sewing keeps me sane. It's tactile. It's useful. It's meditative. It's creative.</div>

When writing patterns and tutorials, I strive to create designs that are both accessible to new quilters but also appealing to seasoned sewists.<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<b><i>4. How does my writing/creating process work?</i></b><br /><br />I like to start with graph paper and my trusty colored pencils. Once I come up with a design I like, I start making test blocks to determine scale. Finally, I use to EQ7 or iDraw to lay out the overall design.<br /><br /></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
I've discovered through trial and error that something I whip up on EQ or iDraw may look great on the screen, but looks like a hot mess when committed to fabric. For this reason, I always make lots of samples as I write <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/user/373706/pattern-store?ext=craftlet-pattern">patterns</a> and <a href="http://minimushrooms.blogspot.com/p/tutorials.html">tutorials</a>. I typically make a minimum of three iterations of the same quilt or sewing project before I'm done. Do I get bored doing the same thing over and over again? Not really. The joy is in the process.</div>

<br /><br /><b><i>Tag - you're it!</i></b><br /><br />Please check out Rebecca and Kristin as they join the Around the World Blog Hop on Monday, October 20th. These two talents are members of the Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild.<br /><br /><b>Rebecca</b> blogs at <a href="http://knittymama.com/">knittymama.com</a>. As you can probably tell from the name, she frequently writes about knitting, and rightfully so. Rebecca is phenomenal with a pair of knitting needles, but she also does beautiful work with fabric. Her quilts are full of color and joy.<br /><br /><b>Kristin</b> blogs at <a href="http://andchips.blogspot.com/">andchips.blogspot.com</a>. She started sewing very recently, but you'd never know it. Kristin has a soft spot for softies, but she's an avid quilter as well. And talk about fearless with a needle and thread! Embroidery, paper piecing, applique? Yep, she does it all.<br /><br /><br />Happy sewing,<br />Annik<br /><br /></div>

See that sweet baby wrapped in a quilt in <i>Arts & Crafts Homes and the Revival</i> magazine? Her name is Amelia Harper and her great aunt is Minneapolis illustrator extraordinaire, <a href="http://www.cindylindgren.com/" target="_blank">Cindy Lindgren</a>.<br />

Not only does Cindy create beautiful art prints and cards, available in her <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/CindyLindgren" target="_blank">Etsy</a> shop, but she also designs fabric for <a href="http://www.modernyardage.com/shop/category/shop-by-designer/cindy-lindgren/" target="_blank">Modern Yardage</a>. So, when she found out here niece was expecting, she started designing a fabric collection to decorate the new baby's nursery. Isn't that sweet?<br />
<br />
Do you know about <a href="http://www.modernyardage.com/understand/" target="_blank">Modern Yardage</a>? This family-owned fabric company uses the latest technology to print fabric digitally rather than the traditional screen printing method. They use environmentally-friendly water-based textile pigments (yeah!). But one of the "greenest" things about Modern Yardage is no waste. Fabrics are printed on demand as they're ordered, rather than thousands of bolts that may or may not sell. And no worries about a fabric being sold out or unavailable at a later date. Another cool feature of Modern Yardage fabrics? All prints are available in three scales, so you can choose the size that best fits your project.<br />
<br />
Watch the first short video on the Modern Yardage <a href="http://www.modernyardage.com/news-feed/" target="_blank">News Feed</a> page if you'd like to learn more about their process.<br />

Cindy enlisted the help of a number of talented sewing friends to help create inspirations for the <a href="http://www.modernyardage.com/shop/category/shop-by-category/amelia-harper-by-cindy-lindgren/" target="_blank">Amelia Harper</a> fabric line launch. You can see these beautiful samples here on Cindy's <a href="http://www.cindylindgren.com/modern-yardage-projects.html" target="_blank">web site</a>. Here are a few of the items that were recently on display at <a href="http://www.thelindentreeshop.com/" target="_blank">The Linden Tree</a> in Minneapolis. I was so thrilled when Cindy asked me to design Amelia's quilt. We met several times to discuss the fabric line, her style, and she shared with me some of her favorite baby quilts she found on Pinterest. Armed with Cindy' jpeg images, I got to work designing an Arts & Crafts-inspired modern baby quilt pattern.<br />

<br />
I really enjoyed sewing with the Amelia Harper fabrics. Modern Yardage prints their designs on pre-shrunk poplin, which has a denser weave than typical quilting cotton. It's got a lovely crisp hand, which makes for beautifully accurate seams.<br />

And now a few details about the <a href="http://minimushrooms.blogspot.com/p/bungalow-baby-quilt-pattern.html" target="_blank">Craftsman Baby Quilt</a> pattern.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>It's fat quarter friendly (hooray!)</li>
<li>It's easy to assemble and fun to piece</li>
<li>It's great for large scale prints</li>
<li>At 35" square, it's small enough to keep a baby warm without swallowing him/her whole</li>
<li>Use a different print in each large panel or use just one print for a cohesive look</li>
</ul>
<div>
Here are some digital samples using the different Amelia Harper color collections:</div>

And finally, yes, you could conceivably use other fabrics. Here I've used Tamara Kate's <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/159260125/les-monsieurs-aviator-fat-quarter-bundle?ref=shop_home_active_10" target="_blank">Les Monsieurs Aviator</a> collection from Michael Miller. I'd love to see your creations! </div>

January in Minnesota is always pretty tough, but this year was downright brutal. After four days of school cancelled due to extreme cold, family medical issues, lots of snow, plus a textbook case of cabin fever, I am eternally grateful for February. We'll just ignore that -13 reading on the thermometer this morning.<br />
<br />
Last week my youngest child celebrated her 5th birthday. Now all three of my kids are <i>school age</i>. I've had at least one little person by my side nearly every day for past eleven years. How strange it will be to send them all off to school this fall. The end of era.<br />

I attended a scrap management class this past weekend taught by Amanda Jean Nyberg of <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Crazy Mom Quilts</a> and co-author of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sunday-Morning-Quilts-Projects-Treasured/dp/1607054272" target="_blank">Sunday Morning Quilts</a>. The class was organized by the <a href="http://www.minneapolismqg.com/" target="_blank">Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild</a>. It was fun, informative, and inspiring. A day of sewing and socializing is pretty much the best therapy ever. Stayed tuned for more about this class.<br />

Museums are a great way to combat cabin fever. There are two exhibits here in the Twin Cities I plan to check out before the month is over. The first is <span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 27.200000762939453px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><a href="http://www.asimn.org/exhibitions-collections/exhibitions/papercut-incredible-psaligraphy-karen-bit-vejle" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Papercut! And here's a lovely short video of her in action: </span></span><br />

The second exhibit I'm looking forward to is <i>Danish Modern: Design for Living</i> at the <a href="http://goldstein.design.umn.edu/exhibitions/" target="_blank">Goldstein Gallery</a> at the University of Minnesota. I'll be sure to take photos and share them here.<br />
<br />
Now I'm off to round up supplies for making valentines. My 3rd grader informed me after I bought several boxes of cards that NOBODY gives out the pre-made ones. Who knew? We'll make our own tonight while we watch the Winter Olympics. Seriously, who needs spring when winter is so fun?<br />
<br />
Stay warm!<br />

<br />
P.S. There's one more museum exhibit you might be interested in. <a href="http://www.ozaukeemag.com/piecing-history-together-wisconsin-museum-quilts-fiber-arts/" target="_blank">Modern Perspectives</a> at the <a href="http://wiquiltmuseum.com/" target="_blank">Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts</a> looks really interesting. Do you live in the area? Let me know if you've been to the show. I'd love to hear about it.<br />

I've been dying to try spiral machine quilting. There are so many lovely examples on the <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/2013/08/spiral-quilting.html" target="_blank">web</a>. After reading a <a href="http://www.thequiltingedge.com/2013/02/theres-more-than-one-way-to-quilt-spiral.html" target="_blank">tutorial</a> or <a href="http://verykerryberry.blogspot.com/2013/03/quilting-spiral.html" target="_blank">two</a>, I decided to give it a shot with this <a href="http://minimushrooms.blogspot.com/2012/03/wip-wednesday-wonky-stars.html" target="_blank">quilt top</a> that's been been sitting around my sewing room for <i>way</i> too long.</div>

My wonderful sewing machine has one major flaw - the walking foot does not have a quilting bar/guide. Not good for spiral quilting. Actually, not good for straight line quilting, either.</div>

If any of you out there own a Juki 2010Q (or similar Juki), please let me know how you manage this. Did you find a different walking with a guide? Do tell.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sans guide, I simply eyeballed the spiral. I drew a little circle with a fabric marking pencil as a starting point and went for it. All the tutorials say to start very slowly. They aren't kidding. </div>

<div>
Here's the finished product. Wonky spirals to go with wonky stars!</div>

<br />
And to me from me, a new iron!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOOXCk5euH8Cxlz9_hPsXXAgH6RpdInLMflPyZKeKWeeOA2KLjBA3I2FH1ZCa2chsNgjd4Dv0EzGL78xCQUxiOoA7YDlVoYJZK42Nh_koQuwMwLF5_x8pH0FWkCintuSuRmNmAnPXR9MFp/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOOXCk5euH8Cxlz9_hPsXXAgH6RpdInLMflPyZKeKWeeOA2KLjBA3I2FH1ZCa2chsNgjd4Dv0EzGL78xCQUxiOoA7YDlVoYJZK42Nh_koQuwMwLF5_x8pH0FWkCintuSuRmNmAnPXR9MFp/s640/011.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the <a href="http://www.reliablecorporation.com/Products/Home-Irons/Velocity-V50" target="_blank">Velocity V50</a> iron from Reliable. Don't be fooled by the cute orange exterior, this baby is a powerhouse!<br />
<br />
What's so great about this iron? Simple. It presses a mean seam.<br />
<br />
Why?<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>It's heavy</li>
<li>It's hot</li>
<li>It's got wicked steam</li>
<li>The edges of the sole plate fold those quilt seams over so nicely</li>
</ul>
<br />
I've made the same quilt three times now in the last three months (crazy, I know). The pattern requires lots of accurate pressing. I didn't realize how much I was struggling with getting flat seams until I suddenly wasn't. Honestly, this iron cut my pressing time nearly in half.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8EvYMsCAhHl8qgN_ldHrCQ8qTKVP9jVluaBhP9You7oetFsy2txbpdoiEPLyJO8dIgyZVLuAn80TIdZdxmaYkTr2FjHI1jg3E8Pcwwtqr9KuF36sWD71bM1Esgx3W_kMVswRFkexjdLTn/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8EvYMsCAhHl8qgN_ldHrCQ8qTKVP9jVluaBhP9You7oetFsy2txbpdoiEPLyJO8dIgyZVLuAn80TIdZdxmaYkTr2FjHI1jg3E8Pcwwtqr9KuF36sWD71bM1Esgx3W_kMVswRFkexjdLTn/s640/011.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The Velocity takes a little getting used to. It's kind of like driving a manual transmission car. This is because <u>you</u> control the steam. See the white button on the side of the iron near the handle? There's one on each side. Press this button to get steam. Press it again to turn it off. Don't want steam? Don't press the button.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic6jtiKbJ_cmGlZCgZkG4j43NqucESxbD44GRSEsJKJarRErRl6JhT3srTUhuFwt3QyrDTtMkjmFaETSJLdYQj6Zxn3ij-lyRhOef5ja_OlCWFOybgNYx0-GFzbOlle13yInWOZWcKp63L/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic6jtiKbJ_cmGlZCgZkG4j43NqucESxbD44GRSEsJKJarRErRl6JhT3srTUhuFwt3QyrDTtMkjmFaETSJLdYQj6Zxn3ij-lyRhOef5ja_OlCWFOybgNYx0-GFzbOlle13yInWOZWcKp63L/s400/014.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The Velocity has a separate heating element within the iron for generating steam. This means you can use the iron at cooler temperatures and still get good steam. It theoretically means no spitting, either. So far, so good. Here's a promo video from Reliable with everything you need to know and probably more.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/BCngaVKvRwg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
There are a couple of things about this iron that will take some getting used to:<br />
<br />
1. The manufacturer highly recommends using distilled water. Tap water, especially the type with a high mineral content, is to be used as a last resort. If this is the price to pay for no orange mineral messes on my fabric, then so be it. I also want this iron to last since it was not cheap, so distilled water it is.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwf__0RrIff910yVPUuEQEtWvTvzzyiW4x0iaVkmXrVQl6KqGYT2bSe2xrJjCIBXzkErC-CR0wyI97nydXfbBFZzMRyaEakfewpRApTF1Enjas2xDniY7683Hwykq9xTOkWnjtJvxUQo6/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFwf__0RrIff910yVPUuEQEtWvTvzzyiW4x0iaVkmXrVQl6KqGYT2bSe2xrJjCIBXzkErC-CR0wyI97nydXfbBFZzMRyaEakfewpRApTF1Enjas2xDniY7683Hwykq9xTOkWnjtJvxUQo6/s400/018.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
2. I discovered that if I don't turn off the steam when the iron is in the resting position, the next time I lift the iron to press a seam an enormous cloud of steam comes rushing out. Scary! Now I'm very careful to turn the steam off the moment I tip the iron back up again. Again, it's like driving a stick shift.<br />
<br />
In general, I'm very impressed with the Velocity iron, and completely beguiled by the orange color. Never underestimate the importance of good sewing machine and a good iron!<br />
<br />
One last thing before I go. Remember that reading light for my son? I have one, too, and it's the bomb for sewing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEMvqqulTZt8CPvNc6KfSNMgiYJtLVxAqdKp05Uv8jEBHGp3BJXz1TFH4Steqv4aQ-T3OSeU5hn8i2woIdh7SmN1sfEnP_4l8yd_0aybv4FNC1z_lzuTIX_eoy4JeN-JBM0KnLwRzte-Ej/s1600/023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEMvqqulTZt8CPvNc6KfSNMgiYJtLVxAqdKp05Uv8jEBHGp3BJXz1TFH4Steqv4aQ-T3OSeU5hn8i2woIdh7SmN1sfEnP_4l8yd_0aybv4FNC1z_lzuTIX_eoy4JeN-JBM0KnLwRzte-Ej/s400/023.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
This little LED light is super adjustable so you can get light exactly where you need it when you're machine or hand sewing. The<span style="font-family: inherit;"> <span style="background-color: white; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 30px;"><a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20169658/" target="_blank">JANSJÖ</a> </span></span>is $10 for the stand version and $15 for the clip variety. It's great for retreats, too.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Okay, that's enough product endorsing for 2014. Do let me know if you have any questions about the Velocity iron, though. Do you have an iron you love? I'd love to hear about it in the comments.<br />
<br />
Happy sewing,<br />

<br />
I've been thinking a lot about color lately as I've been working on various quilts and patterns. Color, I love you, but it's hard not to notice the big trend of 2013 - low volume, neutrals, earth tones, whatever you want to call them.<br />
<br />
So here's my question for you. Which color palette do you prefer? Low volume? High volume? Something in between?<br />
<br />
Now a little about the loot...<br />
<br />
Get your neutrals on with a signed copy of Amy Ellis' <i><a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/" target="_blank">Modern Neutrals</a></i> book.<br />

I had hoped to be packed by this point, but you know how it goes. My suitcase is still empty, save for the items my children kindly packed for me. Contents currently include a teddy bear, an Incredible Hulk action figure, a Hello Kitty backpack, and a Dora coloring book. So, aside from these essentials, what else do I need to bring?<br />

The reality is, I didn't shoot many photos and the ones I took are dark and grainy. Time to start saving up for a new camera!<br />
<br />
In the next post I'll show you what I ordered for the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/minimushrooms?ref=si_shop" target="_blank">shop</a>, a book review or two, and give a peek at the massive amounts of fabric I picked up at Sample Spree. Oh, my.<br />

Stay tuned. More to come.<br />

Happy sewing!<br />

LaVaughn, the instructor, was kind enough to invite me over to see what her students made.<br />
<br />
To be honest, I was a bit nervous. Bella Roma is my first published pattern. I sort of felt like my English paper was being read in front of the class. The feedback was excellent, though, much to my relief!<br />

I love the variety and creative interpretations of the original design. A very exciting day, indeed.<br />

Fine by me. July is usually much too hot for sewing since my little studio doesn't have air conditioning. The very thought of turning on the iron typically sends sweat down my spine. But this is sewing weather!<br />
<br />
I've spent every spare moment of the last week machine quilting the large version of my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/154339154/bella-roma-digital-quilt-pattern-pdf-for?ref=shop_home_active" target="_blank">Bella Roma</a> quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqwIYM5O7s4Nj8CtRGbBjvQYvQeqRISSy-H6TRmsD7n_RnCDOUJfw_BTC-478gair9kPbRK2oe_0_qrETTxhk3oYHNRYhOkOc9KEExKbRm7B5ucXAxI1jK3UtfIYbWZGNG_CGucaPdDYA9/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqwIYM5O7s4Nj8CtRGbBjvQYvQeqRISSy-H6TRmsD7n_RnCDOUJfw_BTC-478gair9kPbRK2oe_0_qrETTxhk3oYHNRYhOkOc9KEExKbRm7B5ucXAxI1jK3UtfIYbWZGNG_CGucaPdDYA9/s640/008.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Inspired by Angela Walters' <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Free-Motion-Quilting-Angela-Walters-Designs/dp/160705535X" target="_blank">Free-Motion Quilting</a> book (a must-have for any quilter), I opted for an all over faux bois/woodgrain pattern.<br />
<br />
At 81" by 102", this is the largest quilt I've ever made and the free motion design is taking me FOREVER. I'm not even at the half way point yet. It's a 10 bobbin quilt at least and it looks like a single 1300 meter spool of <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/231794712042037866/" target="_blank">Aurifil</a> won't be sufficient. Eek!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIm7L4L16PEeY3rs5te9TEHfL57dhWdQ5mJ0Q-ewno2VrxH-LJIaUqk7kyq0ooCdEBMEABWZQ_OUe7xuFMEUkoshdF3Bi1cIojNjJ50VliMGuKg-yxSfuohR2Ek_-dIl7yExewMZnVujhY/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIm7L4L16PEeY3rs5te9TEHfL57dhWdQ5mJ0Q-ewno2VrxH-LJIaUqk7kyq0ooCdEBMEABWZQ_OUe7xuFMEUkoshdF3Bi1cIojNjJ50VliMGuKg-yxSfuohR2Ek_-dIl7yExewMZnVujhY/s640/013.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
All whining aside, it feels great to be sewing.<br />
<br />

<br />
Here's a bit of info about the pattern...<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The design was inspired by Italian tile work.</li>
<li>It's the perfect pattern for that single charm pack or layer cake hanging around in your fabric stash.</li>
<li>Most of the yardage required is solid quilting cotton. Since solids tend to be less expensive than prints it's economical. Hooray!</li>
<li>The pattern includes two versions: </li>
</ul>
<ul><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">a <b>throw quilt</b><span style="line-height: 16px;"> made from <u>one</u> charm pack, a coordinating print for the floating squares and narrow border, and a solid background fabric. The finished size is 46" by 55 1/2". </span></span></li>
</ul>

And I have one more exciting bit of news.<br />
<br />
Bella Roma is being offered as a class at <a href="http://treadleyardgoods.com/" target="_blank">Treadle Yard Goods</a> in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The class starts this Saturday, July 20th at 2 p.m. LaVaughn Bye, seamstress and quilter extraordinaire, is teaching the course. Give Treadle a call at <span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;"><a href="tel:651.698.9690" style="background-color: white;" target="_blank" value="+16516989690"><span style="color: black; font-family: inherit;">651.698.9690</span></a><span style="color: #1155cc;"> </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;">to sign up</span>. The pattern is available for purchase there, too.<br />

If you use Google's RSS feed to keep track of your favorite blogs and you don't want to lose your subscriptions, take action now.<br />
<br />
This <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/personal/2013/06/30/google-reader-alternatives/2476337/" target="_blank">article</a> from USA Today provides lots of information about the end of Google Reader, including how to export your subscriptions. I just exported my list and it only took a few seconds.<br />
<br />
Once you've exported your list from Google, you can import it into the reader of your choice. I've heard good things about <a href="http://cloud.feedly.com/#welcome" target="_blank">Feedly</a> and <a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/" target="_blank">Bloglovin'</a> but shop around to see what suits you best. <br />

Remember, don't lose your list! Export your blog reading list today.<br />

Happy sewing (and reading),<br />

<br />
Spring in Minnesota is a serious mind game. We've had loads of snow this April, but the last few days have been glorious - sunny and mid-70's. Yesterday, my daughter and I saw lovely purple and white crocuses on the walk home from preschool, then later a magnolia tree in full bloom while driving my son to baseball practice. A sight for sore eyes, indeed.<br />
<br />
Now it's 34 degrees and the flakes are falling.<br />
<br />
This kind of weather calls for some serious retail therapy, i.e. a trip to the <a href="http://www.gladcreationsquilts.com/" target="_blank">local quilt shop</a>.<br />
<br />
Snow aside, it must be my lucky day because the fabric line I'm using for my quilt in progress, <a href="http://jennskistudio.blogspot.com/2012/02/ten-little-things-number-book.html" target="_blank">Jenn Ski's</a> Ten Little Things by Moda, just happened to be on the 50% off shelf. Hello backing fabric!<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
I'm nearly finished with my first quilt pattern, called <i>Bella Roma</i>, which will soon be available in <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/minimushrooms?ref=si_shop" target="_blank">my Etsy shop</a>. The pattern includes a toddler size (or wall

P.S. Speaking of spring, check out this <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/113221250/sale-30-off-folk-splendor-canvas-fabric?ref=shop_home_feat" target="_blank">Dutch Door Press print</a> from Kokka. The pink, orange, and lime colors are ideal for the season. This fabric would make fabulous table runners, napkins, or placemats. And did I mention it's on sale?<br />

I've finished 23 nine patch blocks and I've got another 3 sitting next to my sewing machine ready to sew.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJLFB6wKXZeljVnt43LzCzAVNnmOlP8ailxiBDyaZmOEoQdQvYWmydsAVCVdUbVTlTLgW_X2MpIrmkP-R05IaBJciK1TDCfclGRkNdv27Nq6Z55P9xm6FaAX0qgta3tb2exz1sBFRvpK_6/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJLFB6wKXZeljVnt43LzCzAVNnmOlP8ailxiBDyaZmOEoQdQvYWmydsAVCVdUbVTlTLgW_X2MpIrmkP-R05IaBJciK1TDCfclGRkNdv27Nq6Z55P9xm6FaAX0qgta3tb2exz1sBFRvpK_6/s640/009.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My original plan was to piece together a completely spontaneous, unplanned, willy-nilly patchwork quilt top. I would use up some scraps and make a quilt the kids could wrap themselves up in while watching movies and eating buttered popcorn.Win, win.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9del1x-j373nvioz1GC7MKPpi69kqypgznN-tQXpGR01DXqlYLBGSLSCRc9GOWXCIWtLrtzcsg8mM4FOPIuvPMKvXEfdrSLoH6X9sK7kO_uPIxRr5WZR1v1i7Xv2GbXGuslcSQGZ06M9/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq9del1x-j373nvioz1GC7MKPpi69kqypgznN-tQXpGR01DXqlYLBGSLSCRc9GOWXCIWtLrtzcsg8mM4FOPIuvPMKvXEfdrSLoH6X9sK7kO_uPIxRr5WZR1v1i7Xv2GbXGuslcSQGZ06M9/s640/010.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Sadly, my poor little order-seeking brain just couldn't handle the chaos. Now I'm slowly piecing intentional nine patches with a solid square in the center of each. Of course the joke is on me because as soon as I put all the blocks together it looks like an explosive color mess! I may add some narrow sashing between the blocks so they aren't completely lost in a riot of pattern. We shall see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4-pE67vkQ1nY2e7DLffft4-vdMgfI_ifuO_2CValCoiiUnL8QH9-q1oCESEiv8w9m7ReycE741JUDwjEYYxUeExXGYc0ZD1gWcNUU9wHYAsTHrSh884ZYmDJuQsnw3U-b3MdeV5lVKqEd/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4-pE67vkQ1nY2e7DLffft4-vdMgfI_ifuO_2CValCoiiUnL8QH9-q1oCESEiv8w9m7ReycE741JUDwjEYYxUeExXGYc0ZD1gWcNUU9wHYAsTHrSh884ZYmDJuQsnw3U-b3MdeV5lVKqEd/s640/011.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Although I'm really enjoying this project, I'm going to put it down for now and start yet another quilt top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Rather than focusing on the snow outside that refuses to melt, the spring that refuses to arrive, the violence around the world that refuses to cease, I'm going to think about colors and patterns, favorite fabrics and the projects I made with them. I'm going to think about the amazing generosity of sewists and quilters who dedicate their time, skill, and resources to sew for others in need.<br />

Remember me? I used to blog here, but eek, it's been months since my last post. I have no excuse other than writer's block and a growing <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/minimushrooms" target="_blank">online fabric shop</a>.<br />
<br />
What have I been up to? Not much sewing or quilting, although I did manage to make a little ruffle skirt for my daughter for her 4th birthday.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOkd124r0gIPLrB1-QoeD9XxCX8SEcTVyrTZUJSo9XYyFYTaDas8qIl5RmLvdGXJVniz5SaVLtEIbfsWgLmT7ZPTpr2eMYTU-NMK0x5zhQaWCc3wC_tHTsodEaAPegWBY-JYIXiqd_p6fN/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOkd124r0gIPLrB1-QoeD9XxCX8SEcTVyrTZUJSo9XYyFYTaDas8qIl5RmLvdGXJVniz5SaVLtEIbfsWgLmT7ZPTpr2eMYTU-NMK0x5zhQaWCc3wC_tHTsodEaAPegWBY-JYIXiqd_p6fN/s640/001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used fabrics from <a href="http://www.dsquilts.com/fabric_and_patterns.asp?PageID=242" target="_blank">Denyse Schmidt's</a> first line for <a href="http://www.joann.com/" target="_blank">Joann's</a> for the ruffle skirts. The bow is the world's best dot fabric from Lecien, which you can find <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/122950224/red-and-white-tiny-polka-dot-fabric-by" target="_blank">here</a> in my shop. The pattern is called Rimpsukka and it's from the <a href="http://www.ottobredesign.com/lehdet_js/2011_6/index.html?en" target="_blank">Winter 6/2011</a> issue of <a href="http://www.ottobredesign.com/" target="_blank">Ottobre Design</a>.<br />
<br />
Here's my girl at preschool on Valentine's Day sporting her new skirt:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUXFRtMXNcmrBHA5oCjhE2Pg_8sBviCfODellDKKBbCMcwNtfIwc-7xjJab_r27-wWD6d8Sy6wClKS5bbtokQG8T6vFjmuub8KIc2X8Mmijw_tsr9VyL6EZAN3zi4GZUi_aRv3YuBWZx5s/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUXFRtMXNcmrBHA5oCjhE2Pg_8sBviCfODellDKKBbCMcwNtfIwc-7xjJab_r27-wWD6d8Sy6wClKS5bbtokQG8T6vFjmuub8KIc2X8Mmijw_tsr9VyL6EZAN3zi4GZUi_aRv3YuBWZx5s/s640/007.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />The other thing I've been working on lately, between cutting fabric orders, is writing quilt patterns. I have one pattern in the testing phase, plus several more in progress. I'm anxious to show them all to you, but they just aren't quite ready yet. <br />
<br />
This quilt has been getting a lot of love on <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/89016530104268658/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> lately, so I'm writing it up, too. I'll have the pdf pattern for sale in my Etsy shop soon. It's easy peasy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Finally, I'm working on a new tutorial for the blog all about how to work with Riley Blake chevron fabrics, so stay tuned.<br />

Snow is in the forecast this weekend and I can't wait. Here's a photo from our last snow fall on Valentine's Day. It was beyond gorgeous. My little camera just couldn't capture the magic so you'll just have to take my word for it ;)<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">It's just after 4 p.m. and the sun is on its rapid descent. Our official sunset time today in Minnesota is 4:35 p.m. We've had a brilliant - and cold - sunny day. It definitely feels like winter and it definitely feels like the holidays. The children are all now officially on winter break. We're all desperately ready for a week of rest, some sledding, and lots of hot chocolate.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">As you're finishing up your shopping and gift wrapping, please let me remind you of my <a href="http://minimushrooms.blogspot.com/2012/10/little-treasures-drawstring-pouch.html" target="_blank">Little Treasures Drawstring Pouch</a> tutorial. Drawstring bags are a great alternative to plain old throw-it-away wrapping paper. They're ideal for small gifts and small kids. Here's a festive wintery version I whipped up this week for my daughter's preschool teachers' gifts. </span></div>

<br />
Hi and thanks for stopping by. It's <a href="http://networkedblogs.com/Ftliz" target="_blank">Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day</a> - one of my favorite days of the year! What a great way to discover new blogs, see what other people are making, and maybe score a little swag :)<br />
<br />
This time around I've decided to give away two bundles of sewing happiness.<br />
<br />
The first is two fat quarters (18" x 22") <a href="http://www.dutchdoorpress.com/" target="_blank">Dutch Door Press</a> fabric from Kokka of Japan. It's available in my shop, <a href="http://minimushrooms.etsy.com/">Mini Mushrooms</a>, but here's your chance to get some for free. It's absolutely lovely 85% cotton 15% linen lightweight canvas. Great for accessories, home decor projects, even quilting.<br />
<br />
